As we age, the natural subcutaneous fat in the face tends to atrophy, or shrink. This loss of facial volume may result in a hollowed look under the eyes (tear trough deformity), prominent facial creases and wrinkles, and thinner lips. Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers such as Restylane Juvederm, Perlane, and Belotero, and non-HA fillers such as Radiesse, are used to enhance areas of the face that have been affected by volume loss and smooth out prominent facial creases and wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally found in the dermis, the skin layer just below the epidermis. Another minimally invasive option for volume enhancement is fat grafting, whereby fat is harvested from your belly or thigh fat and injected into the face to restore lost volume.
Our doctors will discuss their assessment with you during your visit and go over the different options for volume enhancement. Some common areas that often benefit from dermal fillers are:
Dermal filler injection is performed in the office and takes about 30 minutes. There is no downtime- patients can resume regular activities immediately. A topical numbing cream or ice may be used prior to the procedure for comfort. Mild bruising, swelling, and discomfort may occur after the procedure and usually resolves after a few days. Results are noticeable immediately, but are optimal in a few days when the swelling has resolved. The duration of a filler depends on the area of the face that was treated and the type of filler used. The average duration is 6-9 months. The duration can increase after each injection, sometimes lasting as long as 12-18 months.

When we smile, frown, and make other expressions, the muscles of facial expression contract and cause dynamic wrinkles. Over time, these dynamic wrinkles can become permanent wrinkles. Botox has been successfully used by doctors for years to soften and even erase wrinkles, giving a refreshed and youthful appearance. Botox also prevents dynamic wrinkles from becoming permanent wrinkles. Botox is the most popular cosmetic procedure in the country, and is used by millions of people regularly.
Botox treatment is not as simple as injecting it into wrinkled areas of the face. A skilled physician will administer Botox creatively and strategically in order to allow natural facial muscle function, while eliminating unwanted wrinkles.
Botox and other neuromodulators such as Xeomin and Dysport are powerful drugs that block the connection between nerves and facial muscles. By strategically weakening specific facial muscles, the wrinkles caused by those muscle contractions are softened or erased. With regular use, since the wrinkles are not constantly recreated, they can "heal" and soften over time.
Some common areas that are ideal for Botox treatment are:
Physicians that have been expertly trained in Botox use, like Dr. Silkiss and Dr. Eliasieh, can also use Botox to lift the eyelids (Botox Brow Lift), and to treat bunny lines (wrinkles on the sides of the nose).
Botox treatment only takes a few minutes and requires no anesthesia, although an anesthetic cream or ice may be used to reduce mild discomfort. Botox is injected with a fine needle into the troubled areas. It usually takes about three to seven days to see the full effects of Botox. There is no downtime and you can resume all activities and return to work immediately. Aspirin and ant-inflammatory medications (NSAIDS) should be avoided 2 weeks prior to surgery to prevent bruising.
The effects of Botox will generally last from four to six months. As the muscle activity starts to return, wrinkles will start to reappear, at which time another treatment may be given. Wrinkles often appear less severe with time and additional treatments.
Side effects of Botox are rare, and if they do occur, are mild and temporary. Bruising or redness may occur temporarily at the site of injection. A small percentage of patients may develop mild eyelid drooping or facial asymmetry. If this occurs, it usually resolves after a few weeks. Anyone who is pregnant, breastfeeding, or has a neurological disease may not use Botox.

Latisse® is the only FDA approved treatment for thinning eyelashes. It is applied to the base of the eyelashes once a day and causes the eyelashes to grow longer, fuller, and darker. Enhanced lashes will become noticeable in about 4 weeks. It is important to have a full eye exam if you are considering Latisse® because it may cause redness or itching. Rarely, it can cause permanent increased brown pigmentation of the iris (colored part of the eye), or temporary eyelid skin darkening.

Chemical peels are a great way to rejuvenate the skin and give it a youthful and healthy appearance. Aging, long-term sun exposure, and hormonal changes cause wrinkles, acne scars, pigmentary changes, and fine lines. Chemical peels can eliminate these imperfections and change the texture of the skin by removing dead skin cells and allowing the deeper skin layer to regenerate.
A chemical peel procedure consists of applying a chemical solution to the skin and allowing it to soak in and penetrate the skin. The procedure destroys the top layer of damaged skin (exfoliation), allowing the healthy new skin cells underneath to grow. The new skin is tighter (eliminating wrinkles), and has a more uniform pigmentation. Underlying collagen is also stimulated to grow, an important step in skin volumization.
The chemicals used in a chemical peel vary based on how deeply they penetrate the skin and are chosen for every patient's skin characteristics. Some chemical peels can be bought over-the-counter, the more potent and effective ones are administered by physicians. The most common chemical peel used in our practice is TCA (trichloroacetic acid), a medium peel, and AHA (alphahydroxy acid), a mild peel. Chemical peels may be applied at the time of eyelid surgery. The application process takes about 15 minutes and can be applied to the entire face, or specific trouble areas.
There may be some stinging for a few minutes as the chemical peel is applied. The recovery time depends on your skin type and the strength of the chemical, but usually patients will experience flaky, red skin for 1-3 weeks.
